The Blaster virus and how to get rid of it.
The blaster virus is still infecting thousands of machines across the web. There are now 9 variants of the blaster virus active on the internet and a huge number of machines are still infected and trying to infect others. This virus exploits weakness in Microsoft Explorer and causes annoying problems on your machine. Examples are:
- Machine reboots over and over
- Cut and Paste between Office apps does not work
- Email download in Outlook fails
- Links don't work on web pages

Terminating the virus Program
To stop your windows XP machine rebooting
1. Select Start -> Run
2. type shutdown -a in the box and press Ok.
3. This will stop the reboot at least for a few useful minutes while
you disinfect.
This procedure terminates the running virus process from memory.
- Open Windows Task Manager and click the Processes tab.
- In the list of running programs, locate the process:
MSBLAST.EXE
- Select the process, then press the End Process button.
- To check if the process has been terminated, close Task Manager, and then open it again.
- If the process is still running then continue anyway
- Close Task Manager.
Removing Autostart Entries from the Registry
Removing autostart entries from the registry prevents the malware from executing during startup.
- Open Registry Editor. To do this, click Start>Run, type Regedit, then press Enter.
- In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run - In the right panel, locate and delete the entry: "windows auto update" = MSBLAST.EXE
- Close Registry Editor.
Now reboot your machine.
Get a firewall
Download a software firewall from www.kerio.com or www.zonealarm.com and install it.
Re-infection
If you find that the msblast virus has come back before you install the firewall then go through the instructions again and this time the firewall will protect you against re-infection.
